Rock singer and pipa player Lin Di continues to show her versatility with her latest album, The Gossypium Era, which she defines as returning to her folk roots but with an edgy twist. Her goal, she says, is to take listeners back to the New Stone Age with experimental Chinese folk music as she plays her four-stringed Chinese instrument.


After the premiere show on June 14 in her hometown of Shanghai Sergio Romero Argentina Jersey , the 39-year-old held a live concert in Beijing late last month to showcase the new album.


In the small live-house venue at Post Mountain Art Space, almost 100 people sat on straw mats, facing a white stage where around 10 band members played traditional folk instruments, including flute, ruan (a Chinese plucked string instrument) and guzheng (Chinese zither).

The other players are Lin's former classmates at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she majored in traditional Chinese music and pipa.

Words projected on the screen behind the stage introduced the story of each song. Lin also interacted with the crowd, asking viewers to shake sand hammers and make deep, guttural sounds to evoke the wars of primitive people.


Since learning pipa at age 4 and composing in high school Ramiro Funes Mori Argentina Jersey , Lin has been trying to find ways to make the Chinese instrument sound modern and unconventional.


"There was a period of time that I didn't want to play pipa anymore. So I founded Cold Fairyland and played keyboard while being the vocalist," she says.


"But it seems that pipa and traditional Chinese folk music have always been there, influencing my thoughts and composing."


In 2005, she went to Guizhou province to visit tribes of the Miao ethnic group. That life, isolated from modern civilization, inspired her to make the album - her third solo album Nicolas Otamendi Argentina Jersey , after 2002's Ten Days in Magic Land and 2004's Bride in Legend - which is about the relationship between prehistoric life and music.

In 2006, she composed 12 songs for the album. But due to the avant-garde approach, her record company at the time didn't release the album. Besides Cold Fairyland and the current folk-music band, Lin has another group, Swing Shine, which she formed in 2010 with French musician Jeremy Lasry, who is now her husband.

He originally came to China with a French band on a six-month contract to perform at a Shanghai bar.


Now, the couple is flying to Europe for their honeymoon. They will return to Beijing in September to perform at a jazz festival.
